Amdo is one of the three traditional states of Tibet, the other two being Ü-Tsang and Kham; it is also the birth place of the 14th Dalai Lama. Amdo encompasses a large area from the Yellow River to the Yangtze River and and is the home of many important Tibetan Buddhist monks, scholars who had a major influence on both politics and religious development of Tibet like the 14th Dalai Lama, the 10th Panchen Lama, and the great reformer Je Tsongkhapa.
During our journey, we join pilgrims on their pilgrimage trail, admire some of Tibetan most respected art-work and hike through charming local Tibetan villages. One of the key highlights is to visit Labrang Monastery which is situated at the strategic intersection of four major Asian cultures—Tibetan, Mongolian, Han Chinese, and Chinese Muslim. Labrang is also one of the largest Buddhist monastic universities in the Tibetan region.
